Prince Rupert lies within the old Hudson Bay Company land reserve. It was first developed during the post-WWII housing boom. The area's centre is residential with large scale commercial uses to the west and the municipal airport to the east. Kingsway Avenue, named to honour King George VI, is a major feature of this part of the city.
